Extreme humidity in southern California

August 30, 2013

Thank you to Jim Means for passing along the following information today!

It was unusually humid this morning in San Diego. The integrated water vapor (precipitable water) measured in this morning’s balloon sounding was 2.22″ of water equivalent, just shy of the all-time record for the Miramar site of 2.23″. That record was set back on August 10, 1998. The Miramar measurement is greater than typically humid locations like like Key West, FL (1.84″) or Corpus Christi, TX (1.73″).

The plot below from (http://www.crh.noaa.gov/unr/?n=pw) shows how today’s value compares with climatology.

The current conditions are caused by a strong tropical easterly wave that is being enhanced with the remains of Tropical Storm Juliette, which dissipated off of central Baja.
